History Of The College Promenade BIA

By Thomas Cook

Canvassing Interest The origins of the College Promenade BIA began in the summer of 2004, around the time that current director John P. Ferreira purchased a property for his law practice in the area. As he explains, “More than ever, I felt like this was my community. I wanted to do everything possible to improve it, not just for economic reasons but because now it had become my home.” John knew of the success of other BIAs, and wanted to emulate that success on College Street west. John began by corresponding with Ron Nash, of the City of Toronto BIA Office. “Ron Nash’s knowledge and guidance was instrumental in the BIA’s formation; he continues to be an invaluable member of the BIA team to this day.” At the same time, John personally visited each and every business along College Street west of Shaw Street, to inquire about whether there was broader interest in forming a BIA. Fortunately, there was. Formation A steering committee was formed among interested business and property owners, with John as its Chair, and its first meeting held on September 28th, 2004.  Particularly active members of this committee included Manuel Casaca of the Golden Comb, Joe Macado

Streetscape Plan For College Street – We Want Your Input

We asked ourselves, what do we want our street to look like in the coming years?  The solution is to create a Streetscape Plan – something that over the long term our BIA and the City could use as a guide for future development. At the last AGM, we talked about bringing on a company that could create a guideline for what we would like our BIA to look like a few years from now, and even 25 years down the road.  Well we did it! We found the company that will create a plan for what we envision. ...

How safe are the cleaning products you use for your family and the environment?

Cleaning Products

The answer is quite simple: If they include any of the ingredients listed below, they’re not. Many of the household products you use everyday contain ingredients that irritate the eyes, cause sneezing and coughing, even muscle soreness.  Many of these chemicals are also carcinogens and negatively impact the environment. Did you know? Children who are exposed to non-ecological cleaning products are 400% more likely to have asthma. Bio-persistent chemicals pollute our lakes and rivers and in turn pollute our own water supply. The packaging of many cleaning products is also very harmful to the environment. Simply combining a couple...

Planter Box Flowers Are Kept Fresh All Summer

Planter Box Flowers Are Kept Fresh All Summer

I hope you’ve noticed that the planter boxes along the College Promenade section of College are looking beautiful.  Our expert gardener periodically changes the contents of the boxes to reflect the change in the seasons.  There’s even evergreen in them during the winter! We’ve even noticed our Chairman Mike out there some days removing the grafitti from them.

Low-Tech Business Cards Are Still Relevant – And Here’s How To Use Them!

A great article on PropertyWire’s Marketing Blog… Each passing advancement in an age of unprecedented, hand-over-fist technological progress seems to change the way we do business just a little bit. A gadget here, a gizmo there seems to add up to making our work-a-day world lighter and easier. The key to staying on track and staying true to yourself, though, is remembering why you’re in business in the first place. And the answer to that is as old as the hills. So as our age of electronic connectivity grows more comprehensive are old-school networking materials such as business cards...
